Samantha Knotek 2/14/11 Interpretations Chapter 4 Journal Walter LaFeber starts his essay discussing the four interpretations that historians use to explain the causes of the war in 1898. The first interpretation is that the war was caused by the American public opinion and their “yellow journalism”. The second interpretation explained that the United States went to war to help the Cubans and to free them from Spanish control and policies. The third interpretation explains the role of the “Large Policy” of conquering a large empire of land. Lastly, the final interpretation explains how the economic drive caused the United States to go to war. LaFeber goes into explaining the economic crisis in the 1890’s and how it caused the chain of events that he believes caused the war. The United States started with great success in their manufacturing plants; the international trade was bigger than any other nation. But the nation fell during the economic depression that sent workers into unemployment and caused companies to close down. This caused the people to make a decision;
