NOVEMBER 4 TH , 2010 1. intro 2. what is your gender? 3. “gender trouble” 4. feminism and the critique of patriarchy -gender explains why we are stratified in a certain society -why does one body earn more or less money in the job field bc their body is categorized as “males” or “females” -gender becomes a way of creating a hierarchy and stratifying society gender-- “personal traits and social positions that people attach to being a certain gender in society” (Macionis) gender creates the cultural scripts and codes inscribed on bodies as well as the performances through which those codes and scripts are embodied we live the scripts and codes of our culture gender becomes a way of “reading” and “organizing” bodies we “perform” the way society expects us to in society gender can not exist before society/socialization -one is not born a man, but becomes a man through socialization and inscription—-body can become many things and many genders (Hijra)
