Christianson English 311H 4 February 2009 Literary Review and Annotated Bibliography: Cognitive Construction of Chinese American Identity in Gish Jen’s “Gratitude” Working Thesis Gish Jen’s adroit ability to tap humor in the face of sadness helps the reader identify Tina as a bridge between cultural conveyances instead of the more traditionally critiqued tower on one side of the cultural generation gap. Literary Review As an author of novels as well as short fiction, Gish Jen is known for her complex portrayals of diasporic identity construction. In “Postmodern Hybridity and Performing Identity,” Fu-Jen Chen agrees with critic Rachel Lee that Jen’s work consistently insists on “anti- essentialism,” favoring instead the idea of “self-invention” (394). This theme of self-invention translates to more than creation; it becomes the power to assemble one’s own identity within preformed cultural constructs.
