Skylar Powell Ch. 8:-Organizational Culture, structure, and design Objectives: The objectives for our class on April 6 th (Wednesday) are to review, discuss, and understand the various perspectives on organizational culture, structure, and design. Assignments: Paper #1 is due today (About 3-5 pages double spaced). Outline of Slides/Study Guide: Group warm-up questions: What type of organizational culture (or atmosphere) best suits your personality and work style? 1. Ch. 8: Organizational Culture a. Organizational culture: (or, corporate culture ) A system of shared beliefs and values that develops within an organization and guides the behavior of its members. b. Four types of organizational culture: (Drawn from the Competing Values Framework) i. Clan culture: Has an internal focus and values flexibility rather than stability and control. ii. Adhocracy culture: Has an external focus and values flexibility and control. iii. Market culture: Has a strong external focus and values stability and control. iv. Hierarchy culture: Has an internal focus and values stability and control over flexibility. c. Three levels of organizational culture: i. Level 1-Observable artifacts: Physical and very observable things (manner of dress, awards, myths, stories, rituals, ceremonies, decorations, etc.) ii. Level 2-Espoused values: The explicitly stated values and norms preferred by the organization. iii. Level 3 - Basic Assumptions: Not observable, but represent the core values of an organization’s culture. These values are “taken for granted,” and very difficult to change. d. How employees learn a culture: (See also: the cultural web at the end of these notes) i. Symbols: An object, act, quality, or event that conveys meaning to others. ii.
