* The average lifespan of an American today is 78  years. * In 1900, the average lifespan of an American was 47  years. * In Ancient Greece, the average lifespan was 28  years.   *  80 percent of our US Congress is over 50. * People over the age of 55 own 77 percent of all  financial assets in the US. * In some cultures, there is no concept or recognition  of middle age.

* What do Tom Cruise, Uma Thurman, and  Jennifer Aniston have to do with a lecture on  middle age?   * First, they are all middle aged adults.   * Second, they are all facing some of the same  developmental issues as everyone else who is  middle aged. * Third, they are very public with their lives.

* Middle age brings with  it a certain unavoidable  awareness of physical  changes. * Muscle strength  decreases. * Vision declines  somewhat. * Outward appearance  begins to change. * Flu and other  temporary illnesses  and injuries occur less  often. * Sore muscles, arthritis,  and chronic problems  occur more often. * Diet and exercise are  important.
