Gross Motor Development in Early  Childhood  Children s bodies come under better control in early  childhood. Center of gravity shifts downward. Throwing and catching balls, steering tricycles, and  swinging on bars become progressively easier. By the end of early childhood all skills are performed with  greater speed and accuracy.

Features of Motor Play Young children like to find new uses for familiar objects  and familiar uses for new objects. Motor skills are mastered through everyday activity and  play, not through formal practice. When adults push or criticize a young child performance, they actually impede progress. Adults involved in young children s motor activities  should emphasize fun.

Rough and Tumble Play Emerges in the preschool years and peaks in middle  childhood. Involves wrestling, kicking, tumbling, grappling, and  chasing. A universal type of play, more common among boys. Also called  Play-fighting  this type of play  is a safe  context to assess the strength of peers.
