Gerontology Gerontology We all start life at our conception. Our view of life is cultural in nature,  personal in nature, and the outcome is  a product of luck as much as anything  else. There are also many cultural views of  aging and our place in the world.  This lecture will focus on theories of  aging.

It’s Not Over till it’s Over! It’s Not Over till it’s Over! The 29-year-old boy and his 87-year- old grandfather in the opening photo  are about to enjoy a game of golf  together. Aging does not mean giving up  enjoyment, but it may involve some  compromises. When it comes to aging, attitude is  everything!

A Definition of Aging A Definition of Aging Aging  is a syndrome of changes that are  deleterious, progressive, universal and thus far  irreversible.  Aging damage occurs to molecules, cells, and  organs. Diseases of old age (diseases which  increase in frequency with age, such as arthritis,  osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, and  Alzheimer’s disease are often distinguished from  aging itself. Even if the aging process is distinct from the  diseases of aging, it is still true that the damage  associated with the aging process increases the  probability that diseases of old age will occur.  This realization causes anxiety in all of us. We  would like to avoid aging.

Theories of Aging Theories of Aging This lecture will briefly introduce many  theories of aging. You may wish to explore some of these  theories further.  Just Google the names of  the theories or the principal researchers to  find out more. Aging is something that concerns all of us  because it is not well understood and it is  seemingly inevitable.
