formative Wave 1) Formative wave, (1607 - 1820) “Blank Slate” + "Blank slate" - the first people to set up a government in the US. - includes the pilgrims which kicked Indians out - tend to be the most successful of the waves (in reference to social standings) + exept black people (slaves) “Blank Slate” This is formative right? what did they form?: They set up the basics of our country today in these regards: 1) Language: English became the national language - This is not a law but more by standard - except in some states like california 2) Religion: America is based of Christian ideals and for a long time the notion of religious freedom is more loosely based on the freedom of denomination. 3) Education 4)Political / Legal system - Based of english common law (laws governed by judges ((people deemed to have wisdom)) ) 5) Economic Institutions: - capitalism: a free market system - kept the rich rich and made them richer. First Wave 2) First wave, (1820 - 1880) + first immigrants considered to be problems: -chinese, irish, german. + This is where racist comments really start to come about in reference to immigrants

Second Wave 3) second wave, (1880 - 1920) + "The shit hits the fan" ; millions and millions of people poor in and laws need to be made. -This scares america -japanese, southern / eastern europe. Race Race: - the assumption of differences based on real or imagined physical characteristics + A modern made idea - greeks never had a notion of race based on skin color - at that time they put people in a social hierarchy based on location, religion, and language + Invented in 1508 by william dunbar (poet) - he also was the first recorded person to print the word "fuck" - first use of race by Imanuel Cant; in the same definition we would use today. + Race has no Genetic Basis at all - looking at a strand of dna you would not be able to tell the difference between races - but people make assumptions (leading to racism) Racism Ideological Racism 1) Ideological racism: - the attribution of social characteristics based on assumed biological racism + this can be good or bad (at least in attributed traits) - smart asian Individual Racism 2) Individual racism: - I say something to a certain individual that is racist + not calling all of a race a certain way but calling a single person in such a way. - Nappy headed hoes.

Scientific Racism 3) Scientific racism: - Using science to "prove" whites are better then everyone (generally white) + Nazi used it Ethnicity Ethnicity: - a categorization of people based on: +1) Cultural values 2) religion 3) traditions 4) nationality (where someone was born) + The concept of race and ethnicity are fluid - it is what you make of it for yourself -although the government will force you to be in the standardized box.
