Race and Ethnicity: The English The English: + the english were part of the formative wave - the english are not a immigrant group, do not use them when asked to compare immigrant groups Term to know: WASP: white anglo-saxon protestant Reason for colonization: the english were slow on the uptake of colonizing the new world in the age of exploration ( 16th century ). Before heading out and conquer the new world england did a test run on ireland. + the method on by which they did this was the mold for the conquest of the new world. - This method included the harsh treatment and basically enslaving of the irish people. - They set up a plantation system. Their was a idea of the new world literally being paved with gold, enticing lower class and middle class. Economic people groups: 1) Lower class: The lower class in the new world consisted of Indentured Servants. ++ Indentured servants: Contracted Labor; in this context: people who couldn't afford coming over so they basically enslaved themselves for a number of years 3-7 or so till their contract was over - they usually got a "freedom dues" apon surviving for the length of their contract, (which was rare). this was sometimes money, land, clothes and a house.
