Introduction to the Practice of Statistics Ch 3:Producing Data Introduction Anecdotal Evidence - Based on haphazardly selected individual cases, which draw attention through personal interest and are not representative of any large group of cases Available Data - data produced in the past for a different purpose that can serve to answer a present question Sampling - to study a part in order to gain information about the whole Census - an attempt to contact every individual in an entire population Observational Study - observing individuals and measure variables of interest but do not attempt to influence the responses Experiment - deliberately imposing treatment on individuals and observing their responses Intervention - where a change is deliberately imposed Confounded - containing mixed up characteristics Statistical Interference - answers specific questions with a known degree of confidence 3.1 Design of Experiments Experimental Units - individuals on which the experiment is done Subjects - when the units are human beings Treatment - A specific experimental condition applied to the units Factors - explanatory variables in an experiment level - a specific value Placebo Effect - the response to a dummy treatment Control Group - enables the control of effects of outside variables on the outcome
