Memory Chapter 8 Memory o The capacity and structures used for the retention and retrieval of information o Involves three processes: Encoding Storage Retrieval The Three Box Model of Memory o The processing of memories goes through three areas: 1. Sensory memory/sensory storage 2. Short term/working memory 3. Long term memory o Level 1 of the Three Box Model o Sensory Memory -Contains raw sensations, prior to perception -Very large capacity -Material here only briefly (about ½ sec on visual sensations, 2 sec on auditory) o Level 2 of the Three Box Model o Short Term Memory (STM) o Also called working memory *Very limited capacity (7+/2 chunks of information) *Very limited time (approx 30 sec) *Can keep info here longer with __ maintenance rehearsal _ Can store more info here with __ chunking _________ STM Test: o Chunking Test: Memory Test Level 3 of the Three Box Model o Long Term Memory (LTM) -Practically unlimited storage -Detail level varies -Info may be permanent but can be distorted (your brain is trying to make sense of it) 1

-Can feed back into STM Picture of The Three Box Model of Memory: More on Long Term Memory o There are three different types of long term memories i.Procedural Memories of common physical procedures/muscle memory Mostly accessed implicitly (without thinking) Highly robust to amnesia 1. Episodic memory Memory of things that we have personally experienced (personal episodes) theoretically there forever 2. Semantic (meaning) memory Memory of general knowledge, facts, word meanings Examples: I know how to play a guitar = procedural I remember my first guitar lesson = episodic I know what a guitar is = semantic A Memory Test: Word List #1 Sugar candy bitter chocolate tart nice good sour (Pie Tooth Taste Cake Heart )
