Staci Shea  5 th  period AP Psych Project The following characteristics are used to determine if someone has abnormal behavior or not:  Deviation from statistical norms, deviation from social norms, maladaptiveness of behavior, and  personal distress. The word abnormal refers to anything away from the norm. Many things are  measured in deciding abnormality but you must keep in mind that you could be abnormally or if  someone is especially smart they may also be classified as abnormal. This is why you have to look at  more than just statistical norms. When looking at deviation from social norms you must keep in mind  that the normality’s change with different social surroundings. Maladaptiveness behavior is  addressing how the behavior of this person affects themselves and their social group. The aspect of  personal distress addresses the individual’s feelings. ( http://library.thinkquest.org/26618/en- 4.1.1=defining%20abnormal%20behavior.htm According to the cognitive perspective people have abnormalities in their behavior due to  thoughts that are often based on false assumptions. Treatment is normally focused on giving them a  new perspective and developing new values. Social-cultural perspective says that abnormal behavior is  partly learned from family, environment and culture. The behavioral perspective says that the
