Pre-Lab Lab Unit 06 – Quantification Levine 1 Introduction: In order to protect the people, The Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency have passed guidelines for the amount of bacteria that can be found in areas such as medicine, our food, and the environment, this is known as quantification. Quantification of bacterial numbers is extremely important because there are guidelines for the amount of bacteria that should be around us ( Shock, 2000) . Quick, precise recognition and quantification of bacteria is significant for various fields, including environmental biology, agriculture, medicine, and homeland security and even manned space missions ( Shock, 2000) . Which is why we use different types of streaking methods also to separate the bacteria into colonies ( Shock, 2000) . Dilution is important to microbiologist because it helps separate the bacteria so it becomes easier to study ( Hilten, 1993) . Isolating colonies could do this, but when you have a large amount it could become difficult so we use a serious of dilution methods. To
