January 25, 2011 Newspapers Newspaper History: The first newspaper-like-thing was published in Rome in 59 BC by Julius Caesar. American newspapers were published as early as 1690 (Boston) Early American newspapers were not widely read, because… people weren’t able to read. In the 1800s, several important things happened: o America became a much more urban country. o Papers began to associate themselves with cities. o William Randolph Hearst started the first chain of “city” papers. o A new wave of European immigrant used newspapers to help learn English. Wire Services: These organizations provide a common pool of news stories that can be purchased and altered by individual newspapers. Started in France in 1835, America’s first wire service began in 1848. Also known as “news agencies” The Newspaper Business: Newspapers have been suffering large declines in circulation.
