Stars as Personae Stars are people, but also star images - personae that guide viewers’ narrative expectations Stars v. Celebrities : Celebrities are any famous people. Stars are famous people whose personae structure the very cultural forms (films, publicity, etc.) they produce Quintessentially cinematic phenomenon. Study of stars cuts across various level of analysis: text, industrial practice, and fandom.

Stars as Personae To read a star persona, one examines multiple films and public appearances. Then one treats personality traits as ideas. Whether Tom Cruise is a cocky upstart in real life or not is secondary to the fact that his early roles all cast him in some variation of this role.
