Ethnic Groups and Discrimination 2 Ethnic Groups and Discrimination African Americans make up a great percentage in Americans population today. This ethnic group has endure various things such as slavery and discrimination. In 1915, after slavery was abolished. Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland found the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, Blacks officially gained freedom in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Before, after, and during slavery African Americans went through prejudice, racism, and segregation. They were prisoners in a holding cell and then on plantations. African Americans journey through the centuries have been tough and long, hopefully one day we will not have to fight for freedom and equality. The ethic group that I identify with is African American. In 1619, settling in Jamestown, Virginia, the first African Americans came to America as indentured servants . When they came to America as indentured servitude they later became slaves…which means majority of us are descendants of slaves. Many were forced immigrates and travel by slave ships. African Americans worked hard on farms and plantations where they grew
