M E M O R A N D U M To: Beryl Pittman From: Yi-Hong (James) Xu YX Date: January 23, 2011 Subj: Career Assessment Assignment Because of my major in accounting with a financial analysis concentration, I have decided to look into the accounting and finance sectors of the job market. However, because I’m an international student, not all firms will be able to provide me a work permit in order for me to legally work in the US. Therefore I will be researching on large international firms in the accounting industry and the investment banking industry. The purpose of this memo is to present the findings of potential companies that I can work for and analyze which would best suite my needs and goals in life. Methodology I will first explain how I did my research and selected the potential companies. I used the internet to do all of my research. The company websites were able to provide me with most of the information needed. But because companies may not be able to give an objective perspective of themselves, I decided to also use other sources such as Lexis Nexis, the SEC website and Glassdoor. In the current economy, I haven’t really thought about my criteria in finding a job, because like most college students, my concern is whether I will even be employed after I graduate. Thinking about the criteria actually allowed me to think about what my career goals are instead of just trying to be employed. Because I’m an international student, location is not as important to me as to other students. I would like to have the opportunity to experience other parts of the country but preferably in the city where I can get more opportunities and experiences. I have come up with four criteria that I think are the most important factors in determining my first job. Overview of Firms The following are the three companies that I have selected and a brief description on each of them: Pricewaterhouse Coopers Pricewaterhouse Coopers is one of the Big Four auditing firms and was formed in 1998 with a merger between Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand. It is one of the largest auditing firms in the world and had revenues of $26.6 billion in 2010 (www.sec.gov). In 2010, Pricewaterhouse Coopers was the seventh largest privately-owned organization in the US. Pricewaterhouse Coopers is headquartered in the United Kingdom and employs over 166,000 people in 154 countries (Lexis Nexis). Pricewaterhouse Coopers provides
