M E M O R A N D U M ________________________________________ To: English 332 Students From: Beryl Pittman BP Date: January 30, 2011 Subj: Company Research Presentation (Feb 4-11. No make-ups without a university-sanctioned emergency. Attendance required every day.) The purpose of this memo is to explain why the presentation assignment is important and how to prepare for it successfully. You can get lots of mileage out of this assignment. Research indicates that many people fear speaking before others more than they fear death. So the first benefit of this assignment is for you to see that you can not only survive presenting; you can come to actually enjoy it. Next, as you research an organization in depth, you’ll learn whether it’ll be a good fit for you; you ca n learn more or move on, thereby making your job search more focused. Finally, you’ll learn a lot from your classmates’ presentations. Every semester, somebody lands an interview and sometimes an offer from an organiza tion they’d never even heard of before this assignment. Remember: you’re informing, not persuading. Considering your classmates as your audience, choose an organization in which you are interested and tell your classmates why they might be interested in this organization, too . Most students use one of the organizations that they researched for the career assessment though that’ s not a requirement. Just remember that you’re not telling us about your criteria or why the organization is a great fit for you . You’re telling your classmates about some things that you found interesting special projects or products, corporate culture, its
