Coral Ecosystem Components Producers: I would like to start by listing the producers first. The first producers would of course be the organisms (Coral Polyps) that secrete the substance that actually becomes the backbone of the Coral reef. This is the remains of millions of sea creatures known as Polyps. They are sessile creatures, meaning that they do not swim about or crawl during their lifetime. The only time they are motile is in the egg and sperm state. Once fertilization is complete the new organism settle onto the bone like structure of previous generations that already died and became part of the overall structure. Eventually this build-up increases in size, but also becomes home to other creatures that live in a sort of environmental symbiosis. Like most ecosystems there is a food chain in a coral reef that sustains the community. On the lower level of the food chain are the microscopic organisms: a type of algae called Zooanthellae that add energy to the system from photosynthesis. The Corals received energy in the form of
