Identity o Identity is the fundamental element of how we see ourselves o It relates to how an individual views his or her self. o At a basic level, we assign certain meanings to who we see ourselves as based upon their roles, social networks, and characteristics. o We understand who we are and how we should relate to others through how we view ourselves. o We understand ourselves in certain ways and take action based upon these identities. o Shapes out we act o A characterization of the self, based upon identification with objects with particular meanings. o Identification is a key element. o Always related to something external to the individual whether it be ppl, objects, events, or other symbols o Helps an individual understand who he/she resembles and who he/she is different from. o In that way, it helps each individual understand who he/she is and where does he/she fit within social landscape. o Enables us to find our place in society o As much as a social trait as it is an individual characteristic o We have connections to others through shared ids or ids derived from communities.
