CLCS Lecture 10/24/08 Herakles  referred to as "heros"  Herakles is a regional hero  as opposed to local  first global hero  Herakles Alexikakos  Herakles the Defender Against Evil  most frequently appealed to semi-divinity  ma ton Heraklea "swear by Herakles"  son of Zeus-Alcmena Alcmena married to Amphitryon  mortal twin is Iphicles  Iphicles is not the "sidekick"  represents Greek civilization and culture, but is also a beast that is able to destroy the people  Herakles is threatened during childhood  Hera is biggest threat  ironically his name means "Glory of Hera"  Hera obstructs Alcmena's delivery  Eurystheus is born first and becomes master of all Greek men  Herakles's 12 tasks are tasks he performs because he is a slave to Eurystheus  Hera sends snakes into crib to kill the twins
