CLCS 335 Lecture 10/3/08 Athena  Goddess of  city  chief function is to defend the city  intelligence  manipulation of forces urbanization technology  guilds  craftsmen  use of natural resources  practical solutions  engineering  not of wisdom (that was a Roman thing)  business  olive  gave Athens an olive tree and won over the Athenians and beat Poseidon's gift of a  spring of water coming out of the ground  loom  Arachne  Arachne challenged Athena to a weaving contest, Athena turned Arachne into  a spider and that is why spiders weave (etiological myth)  held the Aegis  head of Gorgon  used to terrify men at war  mentioned in a lot of beheading and skinning myths  face of Athens  always presented as an adolescent  female, but asexual  binary opposite of Poseidon
