COM 318 23-Nov-09 Communication Accommodation Theory Expansion of Speech Accommodation theory to nonverbal communication o When people hang out for a long time they pick up on each others speech style Accents, swearing, twang Interpersonal synchronization o Convergent rhythmic movements on both the verbal and nonverbal levels Liking, rapport, and attention are associated with synchrony (convergence), while misalignment (divergence) is associated with disliking and indifference o When you dislike someone, you will self-consciously diverge from the other persons speaking/acting style Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery When we interact with people from other cultures, synchrony can be thrown off through the violation of distance norms and differences in verbal rhythms Deception Persuading people that lies are true Deception is ubiquitous Pull the wool over someone’s eyes Lie like a rug Lie through your teeth Pack of lies Big fat liar White lie Boy who cried wolf Liar, liar pants on fire (Jim Carey movie Liar, Liar )
