COM 204 1-Dec-09 Modernism: a little naïve for my taste! Modernism and postmodernism are not a dichotomy; instead, they exist on a continuum. Critical theory—“I’m skeptical” Continuum of modernism to postmodernism (Mumby, 1997) Modernism/positivism o A discourse of representation o Come up with questions, results, and then have proof and completely understand it Modernism/interpretivism o A discourse of understanding o What I see may not be how you see it, but we can understand each other’s viewpoints through communication (debate) Critical modernism o Discourse of suspicion o Understand the concept, but we aren’t sure it works that well; we are skeptical about it. Postmodernism o A discourse of vulnerability o We accept the fact that there are no truths that everyone can agree on but we are okay with that.
