Focus Questions: Energy 1.  What is energy?  How many forms of energy are there? Energy is the capacity to do work. There are 6 forms of energy: chemical electromagnetic,  concentration gradient, heat, mechanical, light 2.  What forms of energy do we see in biological systems?  Do such systems conform to the laws of  thermodynamics? Potential and kinetic energy are seen in biological systems. They conform to the laws of  thermodynamics because they do not create energy or destroy it, and disorder is created when  energy is used. 3. What is meant by the term entropy, and what is its significance in terms of thermodynamics? Entropy is energy that cannot do work, or disorder. It is significant to thermodynamics because  no energy transaction is 100% efficient…there is leftover. 4.  Do chemical reactions have only one “direction?”  Can we predict the direction of reactions?
