What were their goals and purposes? What did they achieve? 3. There was an essential conflict within progressivism between social justice and social control. 4. There was an essential conflict within progressivism over the role of the state as mediator. Like farmers, wage workers lacked independence. The new economy created jobs, but also insecurity . 2. Thus there were parallels between workers and farmers in terms of their dependence and lack of independence. 3. There also were parallels in terms of their standard of living and quality of life—and in their hopes for the future and belief in an American dream of success and security.
