Evolution and Revolution as Organizations Grow GREINER Claim :We can identify a series of developmental phases companies tend to pass as they grow. Each begins with evolution (with steady growth and stability) and ends with revolution (org. turmoil and change). All companies have to go through each stage – no skipping, and they can’t grow without going through the stages. Management practices that work well in one phase may bring on crisis in the next. Stages of Evolution: Evolutionary period = prolonged growth Stages of Revolution: Periods of Revolution = turbulent times Growth rate of Industry: Speed of evolution and revolution periods are related to market environment of industry. Phases of Growth : 1. Creativity: Creating product and market -Entrepreneurial -Informal and infrequent communication among employees -Long hours with min. pay and promise of ownership -Decisions highly sensitive to market that mngt acts as customers react. Results in Crisis of control as new systems and business techniques needed to pull company out of confusion. 2.
