Instructors: Christine Human 1/18/2011 1 06-Statically Indeterminate Lecture 6 Statically Indeterminate Structures For a statically indeterminate structure the reactions and internal member forces cannot be determined from statics alone. We can use our knowledge of structure deformation to help solve statically indeterminate problems. Today’s Objectives: Be able to recognize a statically indeterminate structure Analyze statically indeterminate structures subjected to axial loading Understand principle of superposition for solving statically indeterminate problems Today’s Homework: EAS 209-Spring 2011 Instructors: Christine Human 1/18/2011 2 06-Statically Indeterminate For a statically indeterminate structure: No. of Unknowns> No. of Equilibrium Equations A structure will be statically indeterminate whenever it is held by more supports than are required to maintain its equilibrium To obtain a second equation in the two unknowns, we can consider the deflections of the member. Sum forces in y-direction F y : R A + R B = P Only one equilibrium equation relating the two unknowns, R A and R B . Note that
