Lecture 10- Environmental Hazards to Specific Populations - Children are a lot more vulnerable - The limited diet of children o Eat 3-4 more times food in proportion to their body size (drink more water and take in more air in proportion to their body size too) o Babies will rely more on breast milk, then they move on to consume more cows milk (which contains fat and if the milk is contaminated, contains PCB, dioxins etc. the child will be more exposed to these chemicals than adults) o Fruits: during first couple of years, children will eat more fruit than the average adult. If the food contain pesticides or other chemicals, children will be more contaminated o Dose: children may eat a lot of a certain food (like milk) o Adolescents will start to drink less milk and more fast food, pop etc. (leads to unwanted chemicals) - Behaviour unique to children o Children will put their hands in their mouth nine times more than average o Children put small objects in their mouth o They wont wash their hands as much (consume more soil, dust) o Disinfection byproducts (chlorine in swimming pools) children like to swim and tend to swim more often than adults and they tend to swallow more water than adults do - Participation in certain athletics and risky activities o Construction sites (lead on deck example)
