Lecture 11 – Global Climate Change and Human Health, Ozone Depletion, Species Loss and Ecosystem Disruption - Its not a matter of whether climate is changing or not - But rather how fast and what the effects are - Climate change is faster right now - Greenhouse effect o This is what keeps the earth warm o Water vapour is a very important greenhouse gas (#1 gas) It is not a human emission though, so people tend to forget about it - Importance of carbon dioxide Ozone depletion - The ozone layer is thinning due to the release of CFCs (chloroflurocarbons) found in hair spray etc. this is what is causes thinning - They are producing elemental oxygen - Bad UV (UVCs, UVAs) are now able to touch the ground - Human health – dramatic increase in cancer (dermal cancer) - Cataracts: eye problem by light - Immune system: decreasing immunity - Wildlife and other animals are also being affected by these bad UVs - UVA wavelength: thought they were innocent but now some type of cancers (skin) are being related to UVA
