Review of the literature and research question Social influences can promote or discourage adolescent substance use. In the article Peer and Parent Influences on Smoking and Drinking among Early Adolescents by Bruce Simons- Morton, Denise L. Haynie, Aria D. Crump, Patricia Eitel, and Keith E. Saylor, the authors conducted multiple logistic analyses for smoking and drinking, controlling for grade, sex, and race. Revealing the “positive independent associations with smoking and drinking [that] were found for direct peer pressure and associating with problem- behaving friends…peer pressure was positively associated with drinking for both boys and girls” ( Peer and Parent Influences on Smoking and Drinking among Early Adolescents, 2001, 95). Moreover parenting practices are thought to be another important source of social influence on adolescent substance use. Examining a deeper analysis of this idea, Influences of Parental and Best Friends ’ Smoking and Drinking on Adolescent Use: a Longitudinal Study by Rutger Engels, Ronald Knibbe, Hein De Vries, Maria Drop, and Gerard Van Breukelen, tests the associations between problems in parent-youth relationships and alcohol use among college students. As college students are at high risk of alcohol related problems due to frequent and excessive drinking, research continues to point to parenting styles and behaviors as important influences on alcohol use even into the
