Santana For my journal on music, I chose Santana because he was the first Chicano singer that I was introduced to as a young girl. As I listened to artists typically related to Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys, the song “Maria, Maria” was the first song that I heard sung by a Chicano artist. A Mexican-born American musician and guitarist, Santana pioneered a blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion as his unique sound is featured through his melodic, blues- based guitar lines. The sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world’s best- known musical signatures and it was through his widely known song “Maria, Maria” that I began to familiarize Chicano music and its romantic rhythm. Clearly remembering hearing the song for the first time in the third grade, “Maria, Maria” was played during a talent show for my elementary school. Although I was young and liked the song for the catchy beat, as I now look over the lyrics, I came to realize the level of romance in the it.
