Know the difference between the central nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. Know the differences between the two branches of the autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic and parasympathetic. Know from where the sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers originate and where they synapse. Know the neurotransmitters released by the pre- and post-ganglionic fibers of both branches of the autonomic, what receptors they bind to, and what types of reactions/ responses these receptors mediate. Know the differences between smooth and skeletal muscle, in terms of structure and regulatory proteins (e.g. calmodulin) Know what single unit and multi-unit smooth muscle is and the main characteristics of each. Know the three organs/ tissue NOT innervated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Be able to label this diagram: o Know the four chambers of the heart and the four heart valves.
