Personality Traits Give Useful Information Use the Big 5 (OCEAN) to categorize people on dimensions that are predictive of behavior. Certain traits predict work outcomes Openness to experience— facilitates creativity and learning. Conscientiousness —general achievement. Extraversion —improved performance on jobs that require interaction.

The Person-Situation Debate Personality theories ruled psychology until the 1960’s. Book by Mischel (1968) showed (1) that traits did not reliably predict behavior and (2) strong situations overwhelm the effects of personality. Touched off a debate that raged for 30 years and resulted in the PXS interaction framework.
