They see trade as o Mercantilism': There is a small amount of wealth in the world, & the goal is to get as much of it as possible for your nation by trade or you can take gold o Venice was the powerhouse of trading because of its location. (San Salvador) He thinks he is off the eastern coast of Asian when he is really near the Bahamas. o He brings back natives, food, animals, and gold. o He is then named the Admiral of the Seas. (made 3 trips) • So Why Start with Columbus? o because he brought the new world to the attention of the rest of the world • Columbian Exchange o he introduced new things from the old world to the new world. o started a new trade with the goods o they realize that the Aztecs already lived there (richest Indians) ← II. Spain—The First Empire • Why colonize the New World? o Cortes slaves the Aztecs and begins the New World. o The Spanish feel as though the natives should be converted. • Areas that Became the U.S. o Juan Ponce de Leon: he explored Florida and claimed it for Spain. (St. Augustine) <---oldest settlement o New Mexico (Pueblo Indians) ← III.
