Phase Change Exam 7 Notes Melting is the phase change from solid to liquidFreezing is the phase change from liquid to solid Evaporation is the process that happens when heat is added to liquid water, turning it into water vapor. The Phase change from liquid to gas Condensation is the process that occurs when heat energy is released from water vapor turning into liquid water. The Phase change from gas to liquid Sublimation is when a phase change occurs from solid to gas. Dry ice is an example. Melting When a substance changes from a solid to liquid it is called melting. When heated, the particles in the substance gain kinetic energy. The kinetic energy causes the particles to vibrate and the bonds to break. The particles then move over and around each other which causes the substance to change its state from solid to liquid. Freezing When a substance changes from a liquid to a solid it is called freezing. The particles lose kinetic energy and slow down. The particles basically stop moving over and around each
