Name: ______________________ Intermediate Algebra 3.3: Word Problems This worksheet is to help guide you in translating word problems into mathematical equations that you can solve! Mixture Problems Ex. 1: A coffee store charges $9.00 per pound for a Sumatran coffee and $8.00 per pound for French Roast coffee. How much of each type should be used to make a 20-lb blend that sells for $8.40 per pound? Start with a chart: We will put in what we are dealing with in the first column, like so: French Roast Sumatran Total Notice that the last row has TOTAL in it. This should always be the case. Along the first row, we will enter the equation we are using: Value Amount Price = × Price Amount Value French Roast Sumatran Total Now we can enter the information we have from the problem” Price Amount Value French Roast $8.00 per pound Sumatran $9.00 per pound Total $8.40 per pound 20 lbs. Notice that we put the $8.40 per pound in the total row because it is what we what the total mixture to cost. Also, notice that the 20 lbs is also in the total row because after we mix both
