1 Measurement Chapter 1 Units and Measurement ! In order to describe things, we often need to measure them ! Read Chapter 1 in the text to remind yourself about units of measure and unit conversion 9/8/2009 Lecture 01 – Measurement 2 ! We will use the International System of Units (SI units) Quantity Unit name Unit Symbol Length Meter m Time Second s Mass Kilogram kg Standards ! For everyone to be able to agree on a measurement, there must be standard definitions ! These have changed with our need for precision ! Now, the second is based on the oscillation time of a 9/8/2009 Lecture 01 – Measurement 3 Now, the is based on the oscillation time of a particular atom: cesium-133 ! The meter is based on the distance light travels in a particular length of time ! The kilogram is still based on a standard kept in Paris ! there is still no atomic standard for mass ! In all cases, secondary standards are usually used
