Neoevolution Technological determinist-Leslie White Revived idea of classical cultural evolution in a different form-more acceptable Difference: empiricism Leslie White-went against Boas’s ideas (historical Particularism) Julian Steward-broke into 3 categories-unilineal*said White was universal*said he was multilinear Stated that: Cultures evolve in direct proportion to their capacity to harness energy Culture is shaped by environmental conditions (Steward’s idea) Through culture, humans continuously adapt and readapt to techno environmental conditions Technical and environment shape culture-that human personality and individual aren’t that important Cultural Ecology -multi linear tie belief that evolution can branch off in various directions because each culture must adapt to its own circumstances when looking at cultural traits-what they look for is something that has come about because of satisfying basic human needs and food, clothing, shelter are tied to physical environment
