SPN 1141 INTRODUCTORY SPANISH I SYLLABUS SPRING 2011 INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Johanna Méndez Alberich OFFICE: 212E Wright Hall PHONE: (334) 808-6171 or (334) 670-3714 EMAIL: [email protected] OFFICE HOURS: Mondays 10:00 am-11:50 am, 2pm-3pm, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-11am, or by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. COURSE OBJECTIVE: To assist the student in the acquisition of basic Spanish skills, primarily spoken Spanish. The course is designed so that the student has time to use the language in class in a wide variety of settings, emphasizing practical language learning and real life situations and conversations. The student will learn basic grammar principles and a wide variety of grammar. The student will learn to write and read Spanish and will study the culture of different countries in the Spanish speaking world. The primary function and objective is to encourage the student to speak Spanish in class and outside of class and equip the student this first semester with the capability of speaking about self, family, interests, likes, etc. in the present, past, and in the future. The student will also grasp basic knowledge of practical vocabulary such as numbers and time to assist in communication. By the end of the course, the student should be able to converse in Spanish with the professor. EVALUATION: Exams 30% Homework 10% Oral Exam 10% Quizzes 30% Class Participation 10% Oral Presentation 10% EXAMS: There will be two written exam that will count as 30% of your grade. They will consist of vocabulary and grammar topics. An outline of the exam will be given to students ahead of time. ORAL EXAM:
