Need for a theory -theory gives general, but it is the role of the individual for each specific case 2 Inadequate Theories 1) Moral Relativism -this is a particular culture, and we cannot judge this (homosexuality) -there are no trans-cultural 'moral absolutes' -depends on the culture - something is not ok in one context, but right in another context (cut your throat v. cut a person's throat for a tracheotomy) If moral relativism was not true, it would go against these people: *MLK *Elizabeth Stanton (stood up for people in the work place)= condemned in moral relativism is not true. *Gary Haugen= stands up for sex rights *Robert Jackson *Hitler *Andrew Jackson= he promised Native Americans we won't push them off the land Problem : everything becomes ok (this is my culture, you can't tell me what is right or wrong) Relative to a given culture, everything is ok. Rules to each culture stay in their own and they do not judge other's cultures. 2) Divine Command Theory -depends on God's will -if God says it is right, it is right & vice versa -quote slide 12: doesn't say when a person is formed (sperm/ egg, uterus, born) Euthyphro Dilemma-accused his father of piety -do the gods love A because A is good? -is A good because the gods love it? Consequentialism -action is morally right only if it brings good consequences -the ends justify the means (easy way to think about it) -bring about the greatest good or the greatest pleasure for the greatest number
