Confessions Book 1 1. First question raised by Augustine is how do we seek god yet we don’t know him well. A. The imperfect answer for now is to have a faith 2. Augustine questions “come to me” A. God can’t be bounded by what he created, but at the same time he is the necessary condition for the existence for everything. So Augustine makes the neoplatonic statement that God :in falling all things, you will fill them with the whole of yourself. 3. His infancy: thoughtless but sinful, he makes demand for everyone but thanked no one 4. most of the book 1 are dedicated to the ignorance of his early teachers 5. misdirection: most of Augustine’s work, the God’s creation, has turned away from his eternal unity toward the changing nature of the multiplicity of his creations Book 2 1. Single desire that drove him was to love and to be loved. A. God gave him good properties, but it was his own fault for misdirecting those properties. These desires were perverted by the lust of the body
