Paper #1 Due Friday, February 16 4-5 pages What follows are topics for your first paper. They cover only the works assigned for Unit One: Genesis 1-11, Timaeus, Gospel of John, Confessions, and The Origin of Species. For each topic we have listed a series of tasks and questions, but remember that they are simply points of departure and you do not have to address every one of them. It is most important that you craft a thesis that will bring together all of the observations in your essay; this thesis should be succinctly stated somewhere near the beginning of the paper. Please make sure the paper is not simply a collection of observations (interesting though they may be) but rather a series of analytic assertions that advances a central argument. This argument should build upon what you have learned in lecture or recitation but also go beyond those discussions; in other words, this is your opportunity to show us what you think about the material. You should not need to consult any secondary sources for this assignment. Keep the paper focused. The material we have studied is rich in interpretive possibilities, and you will find that there is plenty to say on even very specific topics. Support your argument with evidence from the books by citing relevant passages. You do not need to use footnotes or endnotes; rather, simply put the page number in parentheses after the citation (if you are using a different edition than the one assigned for class, please note which one). For Biblical citations, please cite chapter and verse rather than page number. Individual preceptors will determine whether papers are to be submitted electronically or in hardcopy. The paper should be double-spaced in 12-point font with one-inch margins; pages should be numbered and, if submitted in hardcopy, stapled. A separate title page is not necessary, but the first page should include your name, your preceptor's name, the date, and the title of the essay. Please make sure to proofread your paper before submitting it. We expect an argument presented in clear, grammatical prose with correct spelling and punctuation. Finally, you have the option of writing on a topic of your own design. However, to exercise this option, you must submit a written proposal by February 9th for approval by your preceptor.
