Hae Dong Yoo Prof. Parmiter November 15, 2006 Writing the Essay To experiment, to get into the new way, to see the otherness of an object, these elements are ones what Jeanette Winterson is pursing in her collection of essays Art Objects. She is linking this idea in criticizing other writers, namely Gerturde Stein and Virginia Woolf. In her essay Testimony Against Gertrude Stein, Winterson mainly focuses on her opinion with regard to Stein. Stein published a new book which brought a huge sensation throughout both sides of Atlantic, as well as many castigations on her work itself. Stein’s work Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas is a book that reflected the image of herself on a fictional character. What brought a controversy was the form of the Autobiography. Stein took a form of biography, but she “[brought] on the Trojan horse. In the belly of a biography stash the Word” (50). Surely it was a revolution against the canonical concept, but Winterson chooses to defend Gerturde Stein. She takes an
