Ashraf Elbanna Professor Le Gassick Naguib Mahfouz Novel The Thief and the Dogs Naguib Mahfouz has produced some extraordinary works of literature throughout his illustrious career. One such book is The Thief and the Dogs , which describes the life of a criminal, betrayed by those he trusted, and motivated solely by the thought of revenge. In this story we learn of a man, Said Mahran, who has just been released from prison. We soon learn of Said’s pre-prison life as a thief, and how a friend’s betrayal was the cause of his imprisonment. His sole objective after his release is to inflict vengeance upon all of the people who had betrayed him in his life. These include his former wife who cheats on him with his one time friend, who also happens to be the one responsible for sending him to prison. It also includes his one time mentor, Rauf, who taught him that there is honor and legitimacy in stealing from the rich. When Said is released from prison he finds his old mentor, and confronts him. Now a member of the wealthy social class they once despised, Rauf wants nothing to do with the friendship he and Said once shared, and so Said marks him as a traitor. Said is also devastated by the discovery that his young daughter can’t stand the sight of him. Upon release from prison, Said admits to himself that the only profession he will ever be capable of, is theft. He even tries his luck
