Law for Accountants I (GenBus 304) Dr. Decateur Reed CHAPTER 43: Employment Law I. Labor. A. History: 1. Law considered organized worker activities to be criminal. -anything more than 1 2. Eventually, civil remedies were used. B. Norris-La Guardia Act: 1. New policy: labor to have freedom to unionize without employer interference. 2. Outlawed: not currently a member of union, not join a union while working there C. Wagner Act : 1. Established : a. Protected right of employees to form, join, or assist labor unions and to bargain collectively. (expand more from just the freedom to unionize) b. The National Labor Relations Board . monitor and force the labor law c. Employer conduct that constituted unfair labor practices.- any sort of fearment D. Taft-Hartley Act : in 1947 1. Enacted to curb excesses by unions. – union is powerful 2. Established union conduct that constituted unfair labor practices. 3. Outlawed: close shop they have to be a union member in order to work for them. 4. Permits: a. union shop means permitted a union to influence the employee to a agreement which is you have to join the union after a certain period of time. (federal law and each individual states have it also) they get union benefits and not have to pay for anything. b. agency shops give required nonunion member to pay dues but they don’t have to join the union. They not getting anything while they still have to pay the dues E. Landrum-Griffin Act : 1. Enacted in response to congressional investigations into union corruption. 2.
