O 2 Transport in the Blood  1.5% - physically dissolved in plasma and RBC cytoplasm 98.5% - chemically combined with hemoglobin (Hb) 280 x 10 6  Hb molecules per RBC  4 O 2  molecules bound per Hb molecule ~ 10 9  O 2  molecules per RBC ~ 5 x 10 9  RBC’s per ml of blood  ~ 5500 ml blood per individual ~ 3 x 10 22  O 2  molecules  in the body (at 100% saturation) Fortunately, we can understand the whole process at the level of the single Hb molecule
