Slide 3 Two types of adhesion is - Cell-cell adhesion - mediated by specialized cell membrane proteins Cell-matrix adhesion - mediated by cell membrane adhesion receptors and components of extracellular matrix (ECM) Cell junctions play important role in the formation and maintenance of tissues. They control movement of molecules across the cell sheet. They provide structural support to tissues by linking the cells together (like cells aggregate) and to the extracellular matrix. They act as barrier in the lipid bilayer to restrict the diffusion of molecules and therefore contribute to maintaining the cell polarity.
