William Fu (0937355) SISJE 195 Sequence Analysis of the Reader Stephen Daldry’s film, “ The Reader,” attempts to convey the message that one can’t develop into his full potential to be moral unless he is intellectually enlightened, due to the lack of knowing right from wrong. In actuality the film promotes the message that although intellectual enlightenment is required to be consciously moral, one will be immoral if the fear of revealing personal shame exists. Both messages are supported through the sequence of Hanna Schmitz going to court, Michael’s conversation with professor Rohl, Michael not disclosing the illiteracy, and Hanna’s suicide. The attempted message that an individual cannot develop to his full potential to be moral unless he is intellectually enlightened can be seen initially during the court case. Hanna at this time is deemed unenlightened because of her illiteracy, while lack of morality is proved when she asks the judge “what would you have done?” ( The Reader, 58:20) The judge does not respond due to the clear moral answer to the question, that any other moral person would have freed the Jews, yet Hanna awaits an answer despite the seemingly rhetorical question; showing that Hanna does not understand morality. Furthermore Hanna, being unenlightened, cannot be moral because of inability to comprehend morality. The next scene in the sequence is Michael’s conversation with professor Rohl where they discuss
