Blakely This reading introduces the concept of civil society and the problems that arise because of its ambiguous definition. She defines civil society as the immediate sphere which lies between the private sphere of the family and the public sphere. She then talks about the main crux of the reading which is that different groups take civil society to mean different things for them according to their position. Liberal democratic elites see it as a check on the activities of the state while simultaneously acting as a complement to its activities. The reading is then divided onto three parts: historical analysis, current situation, and its continuing usefulness. The author gives a brief history of the concept: it came about during 17 th 18 th century during enlightenment thought because of development of liberal capitalist movements which gave rise to the bourgeoisie who became increasingly active through their struggles to assert their rights.
